An email alias is a forwarding address, meaning all emails addressed to it are forwarded to one or more specified accounts. It has no inbox, no login, and cannot send emails.
Uses of Email Alias
As a temporary address for online use
-> You can use an alias when you need to publicize your email address online, such as in a job ad or to sell something.
-> You can use an alias for as long as you need and then delete it once the job is filled or the item has sold. However, having your address visible to everyone will quickly become a target for spam and other unwanted emails.
If you fulfill more than one role
-> It is common for people to fill multiple roles and departments not to be clearly defined when you are starting a business. You do not want to send all emails to [email protected]. You can appear more professional by creating a couple of email aliases for your CEO, marketing, and sales departments.
For an internal mailing list
-> You can improve efficiency by using an alias if you maintain a mailing list, such as for your drama club or school. You only need to send your mailing to one address, which will forward it to all accounts added as forwarding addresses. In addition, since all forward addresses need to be verified, you can be sure they are accurate.
-> The receivers cannot see all the other addresses the mail was forwarded to, which makes it more private and secure.
