How to Assign Permissions to Files and Folders in Plesk Control Panel?

In Plesk, adjusting file and folder permissions lets you decide who can see your files and what they can do with them. This is an essential part of keeping your website safe from data breaches and attacks. For instance, you can give certain users permission to only read a file so they can see it but not edit it. This can prevent accidental or harmful changes.

If there are files or web pages you want to hide from the internet, you can change their permissions in File Manager. In this guide, you'll learn how to do that in Plesk.

How to change file or directory permissions in Plesk on Linux VPS?

Step 1: Log in to the Plesk Panel.

Step 2. Go to Websites & Domains.

Step 3. Select the one you want to change permissions for if you have multiple domains.

Step 4. Go to the Dashboard tab and click on Files.

Step 5: Choose the file you want to adjust permissions for, then click the menu on the right and select "Change Permission".

Note:

1. The Change Permissions option won't appear for files and directories owned by a non-subscription user (like root or apache). You can't change permissions for those files.

2. Permissions for files and directories are shown as three sets of symbols like 'rwx rwx r–'. The first set is for the owner, the second for the user group, and the third for other users (like internet visitors). 'R' means read, 'W' means write, and 'X' means execute or access.

Step 6: Choose the permissions you want to give or deny to user groups. If it's a directory, you can make its contents inherit the same permissions by selecting "Change permissions recursively".

Step 7: Once you've set the permissions, click Save.

Step 8: Your changes will be saved, and you'll see a success message on the screen.

To apply the folder permissions to all its contents, select the checkbox that says "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects."

To change or remove permissions for a group or user, click on their name in the list. If they're not there, add them using the plus icon.

To allow or deny permissions, check or uncheck the boxes under "Allow" or "Deny". Grayed-out boxes mean the permissions are inherited.

Click the cross icon next to the user or group to remove access permissions.

Step 7: For more control over permissions, click "Advanced" and:

Step 9: Your changes will be saved, and you'll see a success message.
