Have you noticed that your Metatrader runs slow even with a high-performance VPS? A slow-running Metatrader might be disturbing and can harm your trading potential.

You choose a Forex VPS for low latency, higher trading performance, and smooth running of MT4 and other software. However, problems arise when you cannot achieve the desired results with your Metatrader.

That may be due to a lack of optimization. Therefore, optimizing your MetaTrader to run smoothly on VPS is necessary.

Why Do You Need to Perform Metatrader Optimization?

  • Markets are volatile, and you must keep up with the execution speeds and low latency. Choosing a Forex VPS is not enough. You must optimize the Metatrader to run smoothly with VPS for the best results.
  • Metatrader utilizes too many resources. Even though Forex VPS provides dedicated resources, optimizing Metatrader to boost processing power and improve the trading experience is required.
  • Unused features of MT4 can slow down your VPS. Optimization includes halting unnecessary processes through settings and freeing CPU, RAM, and bandwidth, allowing the VPS to focus on what is essential.
  • Optimization ensures that your Metatrader can react quickly when markets are highly volatile.
  • You will experience a better user experience, incredible loading speeds, faster order execution, and better responsive software.

Things You Can Perform To Optimize Your Metatrader

1. Choose the Right VPS

  • Choose the right Forex VPS with lower latency and better performance.
  • Ensure you get sufficient disk space, CPU, and RAM to run the Metatrader.
  • Ensure that technical support is available 24/7/365 for any server-related issues.
  • Consider checking security features and easy upgradation to higher plans.
  • Before buying a Forex VPS, “Look what others are saying.”

2. Close down all the extra charts:

How many charts do you truly need for trading right now?

  • Charts consume a significant amount of power! While they may look appealing, running multiple charts simultaneously can slow down your Forex VPS. Consider closing charts that are not in use. This will help your trading run more efficiently and free up resources on your VPS.

Just click the red cross "X" in the top right corner of the charts you don't need.

3. Turn off Unnecessary Notifications.

  • Notifications can be helpful to keep you updated about things; however, they can impact your server performance if you are using too much of it. Suppose you have enabled notifications for all the currency changes in the market; it will use a lot of server bandwidth and resources. Therefore, it is suggested to turn off notifications when you don’t need them. Follow these simple steps to do that:
    1. Go to “Tools” or click “Ctrl + O.”
    2. Click on “Options”.
    3. Then, the “Servers” tab.
    4. Uncheck the checkbox "enable news."
    5. Click “OK”.

4. Update your MetaTrader Software

  • When your Metatrader software prompts you for updates, you must update it at the given time and never skip updates.
  • Outdated ones lack speed - new versions typically have updates to improve performance.
  • Updates often include bug fixes and optimizations. An outdated version may run slower, crash frequently, or lag during execution.
  • New broker features, indicators, and Expert Advisors (EAs) may not work properly with older versions.
  • Some brokers may stop supporting outdated versions, leading to login failures or execution issues.

5. Test EAs.

  • Some expert advisors might downgrade the performance of your software; therefore, testing them on some external or local server before running them on your vps is suggested. You can check reviews from various sources before choosing any EA.
  • One way is to test EAs on a demo account:
    • Open a demo account with your broker.
    • Attach the EA to a live chart in MetaTrader.
    • Test how the EA will perform in the actual market without risking real money.
    • Monitor its performance over days or weeks to ensure it works correctly.

6. Monitoring Resource Usage on MetaTrader

  • In MetaTrader 4/5, you can press Ctrl + R to open the Strategy Tester and monitor CPU and RAM usage while running backtests.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to the Processes tab, and check resource consumption using terminal.exe.

If you notice high CPU or RAM usage, close unused charts, indicators, and Expert Advisors (EAs) to optimize performance.

7. Prioritize Processes running on MetaTrader.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to access the Task Manager.

Under the Details tab, find terminal.exe (MetaTrader’s process).

Right-click terminal.exe, select Set Priority, and choose:

  • High – If you want MetaTrader to respond faster.
  • Normal (Default) – Balanced performance.
  • Low – If you want to allocate more resources to other applications.

Set your system to High-Performance Mode for better resource allocation:

Control Panel > Power Options > High Performance

In Forex trading, there is no scope for inaccuracy. Even a slight lag in trade execution can result in significant losses. Therefore, you should always look for ways to optimize your Metatrader and trade risk-free.
